Maiya is an approximately 13-month old American Pit Bull Terrier who was rescued from a woman just before she relinquished her to be irresponsibly bred for fighting-stock puppies.  She was only about 5 months old and had lived her entire life in a crate in a trailer where she was not allowed to be walked or even tied-up outside.  Her rescuer stumbled upon her story after seeing a “Free to Good Home” advertisement at her vet’s office.  As a Pit Bull breed advocate, she always contacts those responsible for placing these ads to educate them on the inherent risks involved for all dogs, especially this particular breed, in re-homing pets in this manner.  Once she heard what was about to happen, she rushed to Maiya’s aid and became her new mommy.

Within just months of bringing her home and having her spayed, Maiya developed a significant limp from a congenital deformity that had allowed for the rupture of her Cranial Cruciate Ligament without injury.  Within weeks, she was limping on both back legs and was diagnosed with Bilateral CCL Ruptures from this defect, placed on indefinite cage-rest, and was finally admitted for her first surgery in January.  The surgery failed, so after more weeks of 24-hour crate-confinement she went in for a second surgery to the same leg in late March.  This surgery, too, failed and she currently has only 60% use of that leg.  At her recent consultation with her referral surgeon, she was also diagnosed with moderate nerve damage in this leg.  Nothing can be done for it without a high risk of causing more damage than she is currently affected by.  What’s left now is only hope that she will get as much use from this leg as possible before the joint deterioration and pain becomes severe enough to amputate when she gets older.

During this fight for her left leg, she has still been suffering with a full CCL rupture in the right leg.  To complicate matters further, her surgeon also diagnosed her with a Grade III Luxating Patella in the right knee.  She will now need a specific operation (TTA) in order to attempt to correct both afflictions at the same time.  The TTA should result in as little further stress to her and her leg as possible by avoiding multiple operations for this leg as well.

Her care to-date has cost almost $2000 even though her procedures were drastically discounted.  She still walks with a hard limp, functioning is painful for her, she must wear a belly-brace to be escorted to the bathroom, must be sedated and crate-confined 24-hours a day, and is unable to sit or lie down normally; yet, in spite of all she has been through in her young life, she has remained the happiest, most affectionate, tolerant little girl.  The TTA operation will cost at least an additional $2600 after the surgeon’s generous discount.  Maiya and her mommy need your help and are actively seeking donations.  Any amount you can give toward giving her the normal life she deserves will be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE  HELP  WILLI

 Willi is a 7-mo.-old mixed breed who was found him in the back of an SUV in Syracuse, NY, last November. At 10-12 weeks old at the time, he didn’t know why he was being kept out in the cold car. A neighbor found him while walking past the car when the pup got up to greet her. He had been there for several days with poop around him, and no food or water. After knocking on doors until the owner of the SUV was found, the neighbor requested that she surrender the pup, and she did.

 

Willi was born with a deformed bottom jaw and needs dental surgery to grind down his bottom teeth. It just never grew in proportion to the rest of his mouth. As time has gone on and his permanent  teeth have grown in, because his bottom jaw is so small, his bottom teeth don’t match up to his top teeth, and thus, his bottom teeth are drilling into the roof of his mouth. Eventually they will wear holes through the upper jaw, at which time it will be extremely painful and costly to fix. 

 

Willi is currently being fostered by a neighbor who has no work and may soon have no home, since her landlord (who paid for Willi’s neuter and puppy shots) is going to Iraq and selling the duplex. The foster mom is struggling to survive with a greyhound and two cats of her own. She contacted a local no-kill shelter to turn Willi in, but without his dental surgery, the shelter said he will live in a cage and eventually be put down. 

The vet estimate for Willi’s dental surgery is
$1,100 - $1,300, not including any extractions.  

Willi needs help asap before: 1) his problem worsens, causing extreme pain; 2) the foster mom has to leave her apartment; and 3) he can go to a forever home.

Maggie's Incredible Journey Home
GOOCHLAND, VA

It was cold, 15 degrees cold. But it wasn't just the temperature that had Maggie shivering. Two traps, one on her front right paw, and one on her left back paw, were sinking painfully deeper into her paws.

Still, she trudged on. Two days away from the safety of her home, Maggie, an 18-month old Corgi-Lab mix, refused to lie down and die. She not only walked with the traps savagely gnawing into her flesh, Maggie dragged one of the stakes with her, too.

Miracle Molly

So often you'll read in our newsletter tragic stories of abuse and determined survival. But this time it's different. It's the kind of story that catches in your throat. A tragedy, yes, but one only nature can create.

A house fire in Greenville, Virginia destroyed everything Sandy and Eddie Smith owned, including three completely adored cats, Jasper, Gator and Daisy. Firemen found their sweet Pit Bull, Molly, curled up in a heap, singed, smoking and not responding. It was only when she moved a little they realized she was alive.

JASMINE
CHURCHVILLE, VA

This 2 year old female Boxer got a surprising new lease on life when her owner was evicted from the house where she was living.  The landlord found a very sick Jasmine, adopted her and had her treated for parvovirus and a respiratory infection.  The Mosby Foundation helped to pay for part of her treatment, and Jasmine is now doing well and LOVES her new family and her new life!

UPDATE: I want to thank you and The Mosby Foundation for what you did for our boxer Jasmine.  She is such a happy girl now and had it not been for your intervention she would not be with us today.  Thank you for all the encouragement and long talks on the phone when we were in such a panic as to whether we were going to be able to save her.  Thank you for your assistance with the vet bill, which was enormous in view of the fact that she had Parvo and kennel cough when we finally did get her.  When she first went to the vet she weighed 25 lbs (18 months old).  Jasmine now weighs 55 lbs which is her max weight.  She is in a loving environment with an older Golden that is slowly making up with her.  She has behavior issues that we are working on, she takes long walks every day and is such a joy for my husband and I.

Ginger, a 4 month old Labrador-Beagle mix, was injured in an unknown accident.  Her owner rushed Ginger to an emergency clinic and found out she had a broken leg in two places.  We agreed to help pay for the surgery to repair her broken leg and hope she will recover nicely to live a long, healthy, happy life.

 

JANEY
SHEPERDSTOWN, WV

This 3 month old Lab mix puppy was taken from its family by Animal Control when the family listed the puppy on Freecycle, because they could not afford veterinary care for her broken leg.  A local rescue group took Janey to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon who placed pins in the fractured leg.  The surgeon generously discounted his fee, and The Mosby Foundation helped to pay some of the remaining balance.  Janey is recovering well and will soon be ready to join her NEW family in Charleston, WV.

WILLOW
BLUFFTON, SC

This approximately 10 year old female Beagle was abandoned and taken in by the local animal control.  She was about to be euthanized when a rescue group responded to a call for help.  They took her to a veterinarian for evaluation, who determined that she was healthy, except for bad dental disease and severe eye disease.  A veterinary eye specialist determined that she was blind in both eyes, and that removal of both eyes would be necessary to relieve her pain.  She had the eye surgery, dental cleaning and was spayed.  The Mosby Foundation helped to cover a portion of these cost and is so pleased to hear that Willow is getting along wonderfully well and is very happy!

UPDATE:  Willow is just amazing! She will come into the middle of the living room and flop down on her back, waving all four legs like a cockroach, and start to howl -OOOW OOOW- and the puppies come running to play with her. They all pile on her, one to a leg and she trashes them around. I will get pictures of this act. In the yard she runs and never hits anything - she follows other dogs and I suppose she can hear plus smell where they have stepped. We have a blind diabetic dog coming in from Tennessee this month. His owner is elderly, ill and unable to care for him so we are going to, and he may go into our Seniors for Seniors program. He may be a good companion for Willow, although she gets along so well with all the others she is never lonesome. Willow THANKS AND BLESSES everyone who helped her!

Animal Control picked up this young stray Terrier mix alongside the road. Thinking he had been hit by a car, they took him to a veterinarian, who took x-rays and found he had a bullet in his leg. The Mosby Foundation helped to pay to have the injured leg amputated, and Henry is now in a forever home and loving his new life!

SUMMERVILLE, GA

A white Shepherd-Husky mix, this boy was turned into a shelter when his previous owners needed to move and decided not to take Bach with them.  We provided sponsorship funds to get him transported out of the shelter and into foster care.

 

BRIANNA
HARRISONBURG, VA

Brie's owner called us for help when she found that this 8 year old Boxer would need hip surgery. Brianna had been rescued from an abusive home 7 years ago, with a severe injury to one rear leg. While she had managed well over the last 7 years, now her "good" leg was so painful that she could barely walk. Brie's family had saved enough to pay for more than half of surgery cost and The Mosby Foundation contributed toward the remaining balance.

UPDATE: We wanted to thank you for your kindness and support for our family! Brianna had her surgery just over a week ago and is slowly recovering. She spends the majority of her day sleeping but we understand healing will take time. Again, we just wanted to let you know this surgery would not have been possible without some very wonderful people out there. I just can't begin to explain how much it has meant to me and my family. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We were contacted by a rescue organization that needed sponsorship to pull this gorgeous dog, scheduled to be euthanized that day, out of a shelter in Georgia.  Thought to be a rare Finnish Lapphund mix, we offered funding to get Rescue out of the shelter, into foster care and treated for heartworm.

 

 

SIMBA
HERMITAGE, TN

We received a plea from a rescue organization in Tennessee to help this 18 month old Chow mix, who was abandoned when his owners moved out of their rental home and left the dog behind. While a local rescue volunteer was attempting to erect a shelter for this pup, a neighbor's dog climbed the fence and attacked Simba in his own backyard. Simba suffered severe fractures of both bones in his right front leg. We contributed toward the cost of surgery, and Simba is now in foster care, while he waits for a forever home.

BUTCHIE
PULASKI, VA

A fantastic pit boy, who escaped euthanasia in a Pulaski Co shelter FOUR times. He was so good they used him as the "test dog" when testing dogs for compatibility with other dogs. He was great with kids and scared of CATS. But his time was up! The Mosby Foundation sent out an urgent e-mail to see if we could help find him a rescue or a foster home. It worked! Butchie is now in a wonderful forever home. You can see by his big ole smile he's now a happy, happy boy. We love you Butchie!

UPDATE: THANK YOU so much for featuring Harley in your newsletter. You cannot imagine how thrilled I was to see Mr. Harley Jones peeking up on the front page of your newsletter! Fortunately for Harley, he was adopted about two weeks ago. The family who adopted him had previously adopted a dog with an amputated leg. Their other dog is a senior and I think they are finding that Harley has a lot more energy than their senior. I received an inquiry yesterday from a family from Virginia Beach who saw Harley in the newsletter and was interested in possibly adopting him. I have just sent them an e-mail telling them that he was adopted. Thank you and The Mosby Foundation for helping Harley. He is such a great dog.

Sampson, a German Shepard, knows all about being a throw away companion. His owner at Fort Bragg took him to the pound to be euthanized. The pound was not told why the owner wanted to voluntarily end his dog's life.

BART – MUNCIE, IN

Animal Rescue sent out a plea for help with a male Alaskan Malamute who was turned into a shelter in horrible shape.  He had severe demodectic mange, open sores all over his body, his toes nails curled under, he had fleas, was loaded with roundworms and hookworms, had a secondary skin infection and on top of all of this tested positive for heartworm.  The most wonderful thing is that he has a wonderful temperament and is very sweet and loving.  Bart has begun his numerous treatments and is handling everything quite well so far. We've been told he is especially fond of Greenies!

Thank you for your donation for Bart, our demodex mange Husky.  He had a 2^nd skin scraping & we are heading in the right direction.  While there were still lots of live mites, there were some dead & dying mites.  He has another three-week treatment & then a 3^rd scraping.

Update:  He is doing so well!  His hair has almost all grown back and he has finally tested negative for mange!  He has the sweetest personality, and he has blossomed with all of the attention that he gets at ARF.  He deserves to be spoiled for the rest of his life!  Thank you so much for your generous donation!

Jackie's Miracle Dog - Staunton, VA Molly, a 6-year old Bichon, was in trouble. Plagued with recurrent kidney stones since she was a year old, the condition had raised its ugly head again. We were contacted by a rescue group about this poor white Lab mix, who was in a gassing shelter in Georgia, when another rescue bailed out on him at the last minute.  The Mosby Foundation helped pay his vet bills and Saving Georgia Dogs pulled him and are fostering him until he can find a permanent home.  He's a sweet boy and might still be available!

 

 

 

UPDATE: I want to share with you that on Feb. 1, 2008 I celebrated my 15th birthday. Yes, Mom & Dad really went crazy. We all thank you again and again for your love and financial help for my brain tumor surgery. On Feb 1, 2008 it was 576 days since surgery and I am still going. Dr. John Rossmeisl is just amazed. Our love is long lasting, and love you big time Mosby Foundation, Sheila, Ray and Yeller Roeder.

TRUMAN - Raleigh, NC  Truman is a white German shepherd mix that was found and turned over to an animal control officer in Raleigh, NC.  Heartworm positive, Truman also had worms and mange.  The Mosby Foundation was contacted and we gladly assisted with Truman’s treatment. He has now been adopted by a vet tech and is rapidly gaining back his health.

Melancholy Baby Starts a New Life Unable to get out of bed, an elderly woman languished for a week before a church member found her. Neither she or her canine companion, a 14 year old black and white spaniel, Baby, had eaten anything. The woman was hospitalized and Baby was taken to the pound. Gentle Toby On her way to work each morning, Sherri would watch a hunting dog foraging for food from nearby garbage cans. The dog appeared to be gaining weight so she thought he must belong to someone. Then she noticed that he was limping. That’s when she learned the truth. Toby belonged to no one. Brady UPDATE - 11-18-06  Brady has been adopted into a new home with another dog who could be his brother!  He is now a happy and healthy boy enjoying a second chance at life! A Chow, recently rescued from the King William Pound, Va. became very sick in early March.  The emergency clinic discovered an enlarged heart and fluid- filled lungs.  He also had a diaphragmatic hernia with his liver, gall bladder, and a portion of his intestines protruding into his chest cavity.  The Mosby Foundation paid a portion of his medical bill and Brady is doing remarkably well!

Sweet Rosie Who knows where her home was? Or what put her on the streets? All The Mosby Foundation knows is that Rosie just kept going. A beagle stray found wandering aimlessly, searching for food and favoring a badly broken leg, Rosie’s luck did not get any better at the King William County pound. For six days, Rosie suffered needlessly at the hands of a vet who did not think it was necessary to splint her leg, much less give her pain medication . Drive-By Shooting--Gary, WV Walter and Annetta Blankenship have big hearts. With 3 dogs and 2 cats, all of them former strays, they understand the plight of homeless animals. And, they welcome them with open arms. So, when Suzie, a small Beagle with 3 pups, showed up at their Gary, West Virginia home, the Blankenships made room for all of them. Elvis Has Left His Owner 3-21-2006 - Elvis has found a forever home! 6-19-2006 - UPDATE! Christine Sumner’s fiancé, Wade, had gone to a hunt club in Buckingham County, Virginia around Thanksgiving. Daisy’s Spinning World— Providence, Rhode Island Flipping…twisting…twitching…spinning. A terrier mix, little Daisy’s body contorted uncontrollably on a stranger’s front porch. A Love Beyond Measure I got the call, as I do so many others, asking for help for a beloved canine companion. Each call is special but this one clutched at my heart. Bobby Adkins’ sister-in-law, Judy, was embarrassed when she spoke to me but I assured her that she was talking to an avid animal lover. She took a deep breath and then told me about her brother in-law’s adored canine companion, Tracey. “These two are inseparable, Carole,” she said, “and I mean inseparable. They eat together, walk together, watch TV together and,” she said in a hushed voice, “even sleep together.” I had to laugh and told her I was familiar firsthand with that kind of love. Aggie On a hot August day in the summer of 2005, the Louisa County Animal Control Department received an unusual report. A nine month old black Lab/Corgi mix was curled up in the middle of the road next to a dog that appeared dead from being struck by a car. When Animal Control reached the scene, they discovered the young dog left behind was blind and almost entirely deaf. But despite her disabilities, she was remarkably friendly and sweet, smiling broadly whenever she was petted. 2/14/06 -  Aggie now has a wonderful FOREVER HOME!  Read the rest of the story here...

Crystal’s Gift Update: 11-06-2006   Crystal no longer needs a loving home!  She has a forever home with her foster Mom, Cheryl.   Thanks Cheryl. Vicki Walter from Virginia Tech. called us September 12th to ask for help with a very sweet 11 month old Johnson American Bulldog (at least that’s what we were told) named Crystal. Vicki explained that the owner had released her pet to Tech. saying she couldn’t take care of her any more. The dog’s immediate appearance made that abundantly clear. Spotacus--Brave and Kind As it happens in life, even those of us who consider ourselves caring and kind towards animals, will sometimes walk by an animal in dire circumstances. We have many reasons for doing so, perhaps the animal is frightened of people and won’t let us get near.
