Miracle Molly
STAUNTON, VA

So often you'll read in our newsletter tragic stories of abuse and determined survival. But this time it's different. It's the kind of story that catches in your throat. A tragedy, yes, but one only nature can create.

A house fire in Greenville, Virginia destroyed everything Sandy and Eddie Smith owned, including three completely adored cats, Jasper, Gator and Daisy. Firemen found their sweet Pit Bull, Molly, curled up in a heap, singed, smoking and not responding. It was only when she moved a little they realized she was alive.

With 3rd degree burns on her nipples and the pads of her feet, Molly had much bigger worries to overcome. Her lungs and esophagus were scorched. For weeks after the fire she could only eat soft foods.

But it was her eyes that took the brunt of it. Known for her playful "Scooby Doo" smile, Molly was now battling blindness. Both corneas were badly ulcerated.

For weeks Molly had to donate her own blood for a serum that was placed in her eyes. The Smiths had to dilate her pupils four times a day, wait five minutes then place the serum in her eyes, and follow it with antibiotic salve. Dilation was the only way to ensure the medicines could reach their target areas.

Thankfully, her respiratory system is nearly all clear. She only has a slight cough in the mornings. And the burns on her belly have stopped peeling. Her paws are as good as new!

Nature heals methodically, without question or reason. If only it could heal memories as quickly. Molly grieves for the loss of her feline friends. She looks for them but can't find them. She has frequent nightmares, whimpering and yipping in her sleep with her feet moving as if she's running.

Gently, Sandy and Eddie wake her. Always a Daddy's girl, Molly will crawl into bed and sleep peacefully with Eddie for the rest of the night. Love holds Molly through the night. It's a serene blanket where she feels safe and loved.

But daytime is another story. The smell of wood smoke at Sandy's parents' home causes Molly tremendous distress. If she sees the flames, she becomes anxious and fearful. If time heals all wounds, it will surely leave a scar for Molly.

Even so, Molly has been dubbed "Miracle Molly" by Sandy's co-workers. And she truly is! The vets say her recovery is remarkable. Her eyes continue to be treated and hopefully all her vision well be regained.

Sandy puts it this way, "My husband and I are both avid animal lovers, and so is my son…Our furry four-legged children mean the world to us, and we love and respect them as we do each other."

For The Mosby Foundation, this was more than just making a donation to help a dog in need. A family had lost everything they hold dear. One member of their family nearly lost her life. Three others perished. There was never a question of whether we should help. It was, how much can we help?

We put out a call to our network of friends and supporters and the response was enormous. We're just as proud of you as we are of Molly. Thank you for opening your hearts and seeing the desperate eyes of a dog asking for a second chance at life. A loving family was desperate to save their precious dog, and because of your loving hearts, we were able to do so.

The Smiths are grateful, and so are we. Nature may have dealt them a tremendous blow but Life blessed them with a Scooby Doo smile. Sandy recently gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
